Whidbey Climate ACTION with Whidbey Island Democratic Club presents
Thursday, SeSnacks & Social 5:45 ~ Program 6–8pm (we start on time)
Our electric rates have risen over 50% in the past four years, and PSE is proposing to raise rates another 30% over the next 3 years!
What gives? While utilities plead that our state Clean Energy Transformation Act is forcing them to raise rates, the real story is more complicated. State law requires utilities to generate 100% clean electricity by 2045. Everyone knows electricity usage is continuing to climb (data centers, anyone?). Even more gas peaker plants are planned. Why is the investment going to fossil fuel infrastructure—building hard assets that are difficult to abandon—rather than going to renewables?
Our speaker, Charlee Thompson will share with us what's really behind rate increases, and how we can advocate to ensure that Washington's energy goals are met with affordable, clean energy.
Charlee Thompson, Sr. Policy Associate with the NW Energy Coalition will explain the back story on why our utility rates are rising. Charlee has worked for an electric utility and clean energy nonprofits performing data analysis, research, and advocacy spanning the implementation of the Washington Clean Energy Transformation Act, energy justice and low-income policy, and distributed energy resources. She has an M.P.A. in Environmental Policy from the University of Washington and a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois. In her free time, Charlee enjoys weightlifting, running, writing about multiracialism, and reading Star Wars books!
