At Whidbey Climate Action’s last Island Conversations, we screened the movie “Water is Love — Ripples of Regeneration.” In June we’ll continue our discussion of protecting, respecting, and responsibly using our water for our own benefit as well as the flourishing of our neighborhoods, landscapes and farms, our aquifer, and all the creatures who share Whidbey with us.
Penny Livingston, life-long permaculturist and new member of the Whidbey Island Conservation District Board, will talk about working with our landscapes and our built environment so that rainfall can sink into the ground instead of being chased to the Sound. Penny will talk about rain gardens, permeable surfaces, and shaping our land to receive and store water rather than letting it run away. We’ll discuss working with our local governments to encourage zoning and building codes that prioritize ecological practices and low impact development... and save money.
Managing water well will enhance and rehydrate forests and vegetation, and buffer against the increasing temperatures and unpredictable rainfall that climate change is bringing us.
Water and climate are inextricably linked. Let’s talk about it.
Carpool Option! If you pass the Bayview Park & Ride (at Bayview Rd and Hwy 525) at 5:35-5:40 on your way to Langley, please consider stopping in to see if anyone else is heading our way in order to carpool. Every car that stays at Bayview will avoid 8 miles of driving!
Meeting the challenge of climate change in our own community.
