Island Conversations September

  • St. Huberts 804 3rd Street Langley, WA, 98260 United States (map)

We know composting works. It keeps valuable organics out of our garbage, builds soil, grows more & better food, saves money, supports local agriculture, increases our resilience, reduces emissions and toxics...need we say more?

But paradoxically, our food and waste systems are set up to take our food discards to the Roosevelt Landfill at a cost of about $6 million to Whidbey ratepayers and 400 miles’ worth of greenhouse gases on the way—all to do the wrong thing!

An enterprising group of composters on South Whidbey are changing that... The Whidbey Compost Collective will be featured at our Island Conversations on September 4th. Come hear stories about how they are turning our food scraps into nutrient-rich compost for local use, and are working to expand the effort through a decentralized network. Maybe you got to see them in action at the Whidbey Island Fair—keeping half a ton of food out of the waste stream!

We’ll explore home and neighborhood-based composting options, and we’ll want to hear your successes with your own organics and composting. What insights can we take from each other, and what support can we share?  We’ll have experts on hand to help us.

Carpool Option  If you pass the Bayview Park & Ride (at Bayview Rd and Hwy 525) at 5:35-5:40 on your way to Langley, please consider stopping in to see if anyone else is heading our way in order to carpool. Every car that stays at Bayview will avoid 8 miles of driving!
