Island Conversations—November

  • St. Hubert's Community Room 804 3rd Street Langley, WA (map)

Snacks & Social 5:45  ~  Program 6–8pm (we start on time)

Rebecca Solnit has pointed out that as consumers, we purchase objects that are “silent.” Silent about the supply chain, the environmental effects, and human costs required to make them. Silent about what is involved in removing them from our lives after we throw them “away.” Many parts of the chain are made deliberately invisible to us as consumers.

We know now that we have to be aware of the entire process to create a zero waste mindset. When it comes time to get rid of what we don't want anymore we have Derek Hoshiko to talk about what is involved. He claims that we can already recover 99% from the “waste” stream—if we're thoughtful. After he helps us we only have 1% to go.

Derek Hoshiko, a community-supported community organizer and rePurpose Whidbey co-founder with a long history of system design and work for a rapid and just climate transition. He co-founded For The People, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that supports his community organizing work, including founding rePurpose in December 2021. rePurpose now operates seven interconnected zero waste programs. Its flagship Reuse and Recycling Drop Off program has diverted over 16,000 lbs of material in the past year and boasts nearly 400 members. He serves on the City of Langley Climate Crisis Action Commission, South Whidbey Schools Foundation board, Whidbey Island Dance Theater board, E3 Washington Communications Committee, and is a trained Climate Reality Leader.
