The Tilth Food Gardening Classes

Clinics

Starting April 5th, South Whidbey Tilth will have food growing clinics on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays from 2PM to 3PM immediately following the farmers' market in the community garden plots.

2008 Classes
As part of South Whidbey Tilth's effort to help more people become farmers of all sizes, we teach food gardening classes taught by local farmers during the winter. For more information, send e-mail to info@southwhidbeytilth.org and check out class notes from the 2008 classes below.

Mon. Feb. 11 Understanding soil, preparation and amendments (Marc Wilson)

 This class will include soil types, what to expect from your soil type, how to amend your soil, what does adding compost do to soil, and much more. Marc is the current president of South Whidbey Tilth and the co-owner of Maha Farm on Glendale Rd.

Wed. Feb. 13th Garden sites, rotations and preparation  (Michael Seraphinoff)

This class will help you plan your garden in a most efficient way. Where and what to plant, special needs of particular crops, how to avoid problems by planning your crop rotations and more. Michael is a Tilth council member and farms at Greenbank Farm.

New Class added:

Sat. Feb. 16th 10AM-3PM  Fruit Trees, pruning and feeding (Gary Ingram)

This class focuses on pruning fruit trees, solutions for pest problems and feeding your fruit trees for optimal production. Class will also cover berries.

Mon. Feb 18th Growing greens and early season crops (John and Molly Petersons)

This class will focus on the plants you will have in your garden in the early spring….usually planted in March: salads greens, cole crops ,root vegetables, onions and some herbs. Some of these plants can be successively planted too. Some vegetable starts may be for sale, so bring your wallets. John and Molly's farm is Molly's Island Garden. Their salad greens are sold at local grocers and the Saturday Tilth market.

Wed. Feb. 20th  Warm season crops and season extension techniques (Anza Muenchow)

Learn about growing all those delicious “fruiting” vegetables, including tomatoes, peppers, squashes, etc and the varieties that do the best in our climate. Learn how to get a jump start on these favorite garden crops. Anza Muenchow is the former Tilth market manager and co-owner of Maha Farm.

Mon. Feb. 25thSeeds: propagation, ordering, varieties, saving seed (Anza and Molly)

Anza and Molly team up to teach this class on getting those seeds to grow both indoors and outside. We will also have trays and seeds for you to plant during the class to take home and germinate yourselves. Bring an extra lab fee of $5 to $10 for a couple fully seeded trays to take home.

Wed. Feb. 27th Perennial crops, fruits and berries  (Gary Ingram)

This class will focus on buying, planting and tending your fruit trees, berries, grapes, and a word or two about other perennials (rhubarb, asparagus, sorrel, herbs, etc). Special instructions on PRUNING this month! Gary Ingram is the Tilth Education Committee chairperson and a fantastic local arborist.

Mon. Mar. 3rd  Compost, mulch, weeds and pest prevention  (Anza Muenchow)

Let’s give the plants what they want and we won’t have (too many) problems. Learn about compost, watering, mulches and finally other plant pest management strategies to get the most from your garden the organic way.

Wed. Mar. 5th  Starting your family farm, harvest planning, markets, processing (Anza Muenchow and Molly Petersons)

Anza and Molly  will team up again and lead a discussion about starting farms on Whidbey Island. In recent times, Island consumers have been asking for more local food products. What do you like to grow? Hear what local farmers are finding out about direct marketing their products. We’ll also give a few tips on the processing your excess vegetables for later use. More panelists may be included to give their perspectives on small family farms.
